Filipino Moro panabas from the time of the Moro rebellion against U.S. forces (1902-1913). This particular example uses an American rifle barrel band to hold the grip together on the pommel. These are most closely associated with the Maranao and Maguindanao Moros of Mindanao Island, Philippines. The panabas was most infamously used for executions and as a formidable battlefield weapon, however, they started life as a foliage clearing tool that could serve the role of an axe or a sickle.

After the Spanish American/ Philippine American wars ended, the U.S. pressed authority over the Islamic ethnic Moro population of the southern Philippines, to which they resisted. The Moro areas of western Mindanao fought particularly fiercely. The Moros resisted Spanish and later American colonization. Even to this day they resist rule by the Philippines. They desire to be an independent Bangsamoro (Moro Nation).
