A Laflin & Rand Powder Co. "Orange Rifle" wooden gunpowder keg.
The original Laflin Gunpowder Mill was built & operated by Matthew Laflin during the American Revolutionary War. Following his death in 1810, Laflin's children expanded with two mills in New York and one in Wisconsin. In 1869, the Laflin Powder Co. expanded further around the Orange Mill Historic District in New York, merging with competitor Smith & Rand Co. to form Laflin & Rand Powder Company. They became one of three leading gunpowder manufacturers in the United States throughout the late 19th-century, alongside Hazard and Dupont, until they were bought out by the latter in 1902. When Dupont's assets were divided in 1912, Laflin & Rand was absorbed by Hercules Powder Co. and continued manufacturing out of New Jersey until 1926.
