A Hazard Powder Co. "Hazard Smokeless" gunpowder keg. Hazard Powder Co. was one of three leading gunpowder manufacturers in the United States throughout the 19th-century, alongside Dupont and Laflin & Rand. It was founded in 1835 and bought by its namesake in 1837. DuPont gained stock control of the company following Colonel Hazard's death in 1868, however it would became a part of Hercules Powder Company when Dupont's assets were divided in 1912. The plant closed a year later following a major explosion that destroyed the property beyond recovery.
