20th century Mexican folk art mask in the shape of a rat with a human face in the middle of its back. As early as 1900, masks created in this form were made in the mountains of northwest Guerrero, Mexico. They were hand crafted by the locals, members of the Nahua people, to sell to the emerging tourist trade. This mask is made of hammered copper and polychrome painted. The back of the mask is lined with gauze in the face region for comfort and has a protruding chin rest.
