Early to mid 20th century Mexican folk art bat mask. As early as 1900, masks created in this form were made in the mountains of northwest Guerroas, Mexico. They were hand crafted by the locals, members of the Nahua people, to sell to the emerging tourist trade. This mask is made of hammered copper and polychrome painted, depicting a bat combined with a human head. The back of the mask is lined with gauze in the face region for comfort and has a protruding chin rest.
