The Chokwe people primarily reside in Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pwo masks are made to honor founding female ancestors. Chokwe trace descent matrilineally. Pwo's joint performance with her male counterpart, Cihongo, brings fertility and prosperity to a community.
