The Iron Cross 2nd Class was re-instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War, continuing the Prussian tradition established in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. It was awarded for a single act of battlefield bravery, leadership in combat, or distinguished service directly related to the war effort. The obverse bears the crowned cipher “W” above the date “1914,” while the reverse displays the crowned “FW,” oak leaves, and the date “1813,” symbolically linking the award to its origin in the German struggle against Napoleon. Suspended from the traditional black-and-white combat ribbon, the decoration represented not only valor but also the continuity of Prussian and later German military honor. Dimensions: 1.25 x 1.25 in.; overall length with ribbon 3.325 in. This lot may be picked up free of charge from our facilities in Sacramento, CA. Processing and shipping within the Continental US $50.00.
