The Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) was re-instituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II for service in the First World War, continuing the Prussian tradition founded in 1813. It was awarded for a single act of bravery in battle, effective military leadership, or distinguished service directly connected to the war effort. The obverse bears the crowned cipher “W” and date 1914 , while the reverse carries the crowned “FW” with oak leaves and 1813 . This example is mounted with its black-and-white ribbon and fitted with the 1939 Clasp ( Spange zum Eisernen Kreuz ), which depicts the German eagle clutching a swastika above the date 1939 . The clasp was authorized for veterans who had already received the Iron Cross in World War I and were again recognized for valor in World War II, making this a significant dual-period decoration. Dimensions: 1.75 x 1.75 in.; overall length with ribbon 4.5 in. This lot may be picked up free of charge from our facilities in Sacramento, CA. Processing and shipping within the Continental US $50.00.
