The Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) was re-instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War, continuing a tradition begun in 1813 under King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. It was awarded to soldiers for acts of bravery or distinguished leadership in combat. This example is suspended from its black-and-white ribbon, to which a veterans’ device has been added in the form of a red enameled cross marked “1914–1916,†commemorating years of wartime service.
