Reverse bears the crowned cypher “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm I with the inscription “Dem siegreichen Heere” (To the Victorious Army). Original ribbon in black, white, and red (the Imperial German colors). Medal is die-struck, with plain edge and integral suspension ring. Awarded to German combatants who took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, commemorating the victory over France and the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership.
