A very nice condition Springfield Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 caliber with an 1873 dated breech, but made of a variety of parts including a completely unmarked lock plate. It is serial number 444,575 and would have been made in 1889. The butt plate is stamped 24 over US and 104, which could mean that it was issued to the famed 24th Regiment of Infantry, the First Regiment of "Buffalo Soldiers" Infantry, who, armed with similar rifles assaulted and captured San Juan Hill, followed shortly thereafter by the Rough Riders. The stock has no cartouches, but does not appear to be refinished. The rifle has the sights authorizes in 1884, and in every way fits the standard 1884 description except for the breech black. .
