A silver and iron construction cross with blackened core and beaded silver frame. The obverse displays a central swastika above the date “1939,†while the reverse bears the institution date “1813,†signifying the long tradition of the award dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. The cross is suspended from its red, white, and black combatant’s ribbon.
Instituted on 1 September 1939, the Iron Cross 2nd Class was awarded for acts of bravery in battle and meritorious service in the face of the enemy. Although the 2nd Class was the entry level of the decoration, it carried great prestige, as it symbolized combat valor and often served as a prerequisite for higher classes such as the Iron Cross 1st Class or Knight’s Cross.
