A German made US 1860 Staff & Field Officer‚Äôs sword, retailed by D. Abbate & F. DeCarlo, New York, probably in the 1880s. The sword has several unusual features: the scabbard is plain steel with two rings, unlike most 1860 scabbards which are brass mounted steel with three rings; the blade is completely plain other than the retailer‚Äôs stamp and the stamped word ‚ÄúGermany.‚Äù; the D-guard has an interesting and attractive stand of arms on it which features US flags and a Union shield on one side, and stacked rifles on the other. It was made without a reverse guard. Dimensions: The sword is 37 ¬Ω inches long overall, with the blade being 30 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition

The guard is in very good condition. The grip is missing its leather and wire, and is down to plain wood. The blade is dirty, with patches of rust, but no visible pitting. The scabbard is rusted in spots, and shows wear. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
