Rare 1859 dated Ames Model 1860 cavalry saber and scabbard, produced prior to the official adaption of the pattern. Swords with this date were either produced as trial pieces, or some were sent to various State units, including Southern States. The sword is particularly well-marked, with sharp and clear stamps on the ricasso: AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE MASS. and U.S. G.G.S. 1859. The buff washer is present. The sword retains all of its original leather, and a small piece of its original wire. Size: The sword itself is 41 inches long, with a 35 inch blade. The sword in its scabbard is 42 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition

The sword has a heavy patina, and the scabbard has a coat of rust over several dents and some minor pitting in places. The grip has a 2 1/2 inch crack in it. The blade has extensive red rust on it, but appears that it will clean well. The marks are excellent, and the blade is straight and free of nicks.
