A striking pair of skull-and-crossbones–themed porcelain shaving mugs, each displaying the bold fraternal-style imagery favored by secret-society members and fraternal lodge patrons of the late 19th and early 20th century. The first mug features a black field with a dramatically rendered skull above crossed bones and the letters W R C, framed with gilt bands; the underside bears the retailer mark of Deckelman Bros. Barber Supplies, 106 Ellis St., San Francisco. The second mug, inscribed C. E. Steever, presents a white ground with a red-outlined skull and bones over gilt Old English lettering, trimmed with gilt at the rim and foot and numbered 1683 beneath. Both examples reflect the era’s personalized barbershop tradition and the popularity of symbolic imagery associated with fraternal orders and lodge culture.Dimensions approx.: Standard sizeThis lot may be picked up free of charge from our facilities in Sacramento, CA.
