A lot consisting of two model kayaks made by Elijah Kakinya (1895-1986) of the Nunamiut people. According to provenance provided with the kayaks, "Kakinya made these model kayaks of the way they did in the old days when communities migrated to & from the Artic Ocean to Chandler Lake & Anaktuvuk Pass regions prior to settling." Kakinya was born in Spring of 1895 at Tulugaq Lake and grew up along the Beaufort Sea Coast and northern Alaska. As was common at the time, his family moved around frequently following animals with the change of seasons, allowed Kakinya to learn much about hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and survival. He continued to migrate around into adulthood until eventually settling in Anaktuvuk Pass. He was well known throughout the community for his outdoors skills and great knowledge of Inupiaq traditions, stories, and dances, which he was always eager to share and pass on. He passed away in 1986. Dimensions: each kayak is about 4-inches wide and between 20 to 24 inches long This lot may be picked up free of charge from our facilities in Sacramento, CA.
