Dimensions: both gelatins measure 13.5h x 10.5w inches
Alfred Cheney Johnston was a master American photographer of the early 20th-century, who rose to acclaim for his elegant portraits of Ziegfeld Follies' showgirls in New York City. He originally studied illustration and painting at the National Academy of Design in NYC, but found it difficult to make a living off portrait painting. After refocusing to photography, he was hired by Florenz Ziegfeld in 1917, who he worked with until Ziegfeld's death in 1932. The success of Johnston's showgirl portraits also opened opportunities to photograph a wide range of subjects from rising performers to the latest fashion magazines. Today his photography is remembered for its beauty and sophistication displaying the glitz & glamour of the 1920s and 1930s.
