This suggests that the gun was shipped to San Francisco at the time of the Sandlot Riots, for use by San Francisco Police, and later issued to the California State Militia. The Sandlot Riots in San Francisco in 1877 were a three day series of mob actions against San Francisco's Chinese population that resulted in the US Navy being called in to support the Police and Militia as they faced thousands of rioting largely Irish and Eastern European laborers.
