An unframed stencil print on paper with full margins by Japanese artist Sadao Watanbe (1913-1996). The image depicts the biblical story of the Red Sea from the Book of Exodus, specifically when the Pharaoh’s army and their chariot horses drowned pursuing the freed Israelites. The edition number (1 / 700) is written in the bottom left corner and the artist’s signature with the date (1980) is written in the bottom right corner.
Sadao Watanabe (1913–1996) was a Tokyo-born printmaker celebrated for his distinctive stencil prints combining biblical subject matter with the traditions of Japanese Mingei folk art. A student of textile master Keisuke Serizawa, Watanabe adapted traditional katazome stencil-dyeing techniques to handmade paper, creating bold, expressive interpretations of Christian narratives through a distinctly Japanese visual vocabulary.
