An unframed stencil print on paper titled Jesus on the Cross by Japanese artist Sadao Watanabe (1913-1996). The image depicts Jesus on a red colored cross against a dark blue and gray background. There are two figures praying at his feet, presumably Mary Magdalene and another female follower. The edition number is written in the bottom left corner and the artist’s signature with the date is in the bottom right.
Sadao Watanabe (1913–1996) was a Tokyo-born printmaker celebrated for his distinctive stencil prints combining biblical subject matter with the traditions of Japanese Mingei folk art. A student of textile master Keisuke Serizawa, Watanabe adapted traditional katazome stencil-dyeing techniques to handmade paper, creating bold, expressive interpretations of Christian narratives through a distinctly Japanese visual vocabulary.
