A very fine J.P. Clabrough & Bros., Birmingham laminated steel Damascus double barreled 12 gauge shotgun, serial numbered 2022. The rib of the barrels has a presentation inscription, “MADE FOR MAJOR J.M. LUCAS, AND PRESENTED TO DR. F.O. ST. CLAIR: 1875.”
The gun is an unusually light weight model, with fine scroll engraving on the lock and breech. The stock is handsome, with checkering on both wrist and forend. Additionally there is a fine American Eagle clutching a Union Shield engraved on the trigger guard. There are Birmingham proofs under the forend.
Major J.M. Lucas
Dr. St. Clair was a well-known doctor and naturalist who developed several drugs based on plants during the 1870s.
Condition: Very good, but the metal is generally dark, and the barrel has signs of old rust on the sides and pitting near the breech. The stock has a number of minor handling marks on it. There is a dent in the muzzle of the right hand barrel. The action is crisp and clean.
Size: 46 ¼ inches long overall, with 30 inch barrels.
