Pair of Antique Bronze Signal Cannons on Naval CarriagesLate 19th CenturyA matched pair of small antique signal cannons, each with a bronze or brass barrel measuring approximately 7 inches in length, featuring a flared muzzle and touch hole at the rear for ignition. The barrels are fitted with trunnions, seated on traditional wooden naval-style carriages composed of solid block construction rather than field artillery wheels. Each cannon bears an attached numbered brass tag, likely indicating inventory or organizational numbering, consistent with use by a yacht club, naval institution, or private estate. The carriages exhibit honest wear and patina commensurate with age and use. These cannons were not intended as weapons but served practical and ceremonial purposes, including yacht and maritime signaling (race starts, time signals, and salutes), as well as ceremonial use at clubs, ships, and estates. They were also popular as decorative yet functional desk or mantel cannons during the 18th and 19th centuries.Designed to be fired with black powder only, using paper or cork wadding and no projectile.Dimensions: 7” L x 3” W x 3.5”- 4.5” HPickup & Shipping: This lot may be picked up free of charge in Sacramento, CA.
