A Hopi-Tewa wedding vase by Nyla Sahmie Nampeyo (b. 1954). The vase features two spouts, representing one for each partner in a marriage, and a bridged handle, symbolizing unity and mutual respect. It has a round body with narrow necks and is decorated with bird like motifs, possibly feathers or symbolic migration patterns. It it signed on the underside by Nyla Sahmie Nampeyo, a well known Hopi-Tewa potter and direct descendent of Nampeyo of Hano, who began learning the art at 13 from her mother Priscilla Namingha-Nampeyo. Her work has become recognixable for its fusion of Nampeyo family tradition and her steady, deliberate detail.
