The Moro Barung / Barong is a large leaf shaped bolo sword. They were almost exclusively used by the Moros of the Sulu Sultanate, Sulu archipelago, Philippines. The long grip ferrule on this piece is sterling silver. The banati wood "kakatua" cockatoo motif pommel Is the standard for these weapons. The more ornamented, the higher the status of the owner. Two piece breakaway scabbard decorated with carving and mother of pearl. The style of the pommel and scabbard indicates this is an early to mid 20th century piece.
