Milton Caniff is remembered as one of the great American comic artists and a pioneer in character-driven comic narratives. He was the first to create multi-layered comic characters, whose personalities evolved over time. His use of well-balanced emotions paired with the black-and-white comic effects earned himself the nickname, "Rembrandt of the Comic Strip." Today, Caniff's creations Terry and the Pirates (1934-1946) and Steve Canyon (1947-1988) are both considered landmarks in newspaper comics.
