A traditional style Acoma olla jar by Juana Leno (1917-2000). The jar has a round body that slightly tapers into a short neck and wide opening, decorated in symbolic motifs of different bands. Signed on the underside, " Acoma, N.M., Leno." Juana Leno is considered one of the finest potters of the 20th and a matriarch of Acoma pottery. She learned from her grandmother, Eulilia Vallo, and was known for her revival of black and white Tularosa and Anasazi designs. Although she was well-known for her craftsmanship and earned numerous pottery awards throughout New Mexico, she was quiet and preferred staying home and making her pottery than sitting at the marketplace selling it. Rumor has it her work was in enough demand that buyers would go to her house to purchase.
