A contemporary Zuni olla jar by Carlos Laate (b. 1962). The jar has a classic shape with a wide midsection and tapering neck, decorated in intricate linework in black, red, and natural white colors. Signed on the underside "Carlos Laate, Zuni, New Mexico."
Carlos Laate was born into the Zuni Pueblo and learned to make pottery from his grandmother, Daisy Hooey Nampeyo, and his aunt, Jennie Laate, both of whom taught pottery and are credited for the revival of contemporary Zuni pottery. Alongside his focus on pottery, Carlos also worked for many years with his father in the High Mesa Forests, and his passion for wildlife is reflected in much of his pottery work through geometric and fineline motifs.
