A framed oil on board impressionist style painting titled, "Sailboat Docked at a Harbor" by Harry Emerson Lewis. It is signed "Emerson Lewis" in the lower left corner.Harry Emerson Lewis was born 1892 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Edward Henry Lewis, an accomplished painter. From an early age he studied under his father until enrolling at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1912. When World War I broke out in 1914, Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army and used his art skills to work as a camouflage instructor. After the war, he spent three years abroad studying in Italy and France until returning to Boston in 1922, where he worked as a studio assistant for Alexander Robinson. Lewis would continue moving around for the next few years trying out different jobs until finally settling in 1945 at Laguna Beach, California. He work largely includes landscapes and seascapes in watercolor and oils, and he is listed in Edan Hughes' Artists in California 1786-1940.
