A very fine 10 gauge double barreled percussion shotgun by the highly respected Sacramento gunsmith Henry Eckhardt. The gun has Damascus barrels with the rib engraved “H. Eckhardt, Sacramento, Cal.” The lock plates are engraved the same. The shotgun is of rather massive construction, with large barrel shaped ramrod pipes, and the rib is raised more than ¼ inch above the barrels. The locks, trigger guard, breeches and tang are engraved with fine banknote style engraving. The stock is walnut with a horn cap to the pistol grip and horn butt plate. Both the pistol grip and forend are checkered. There is a silver colored escutcheon plate on the underside of the butt stock.
Henry Eckhardt was born in Hesse-Kassel in Prussia in 1833. He arrived in Sacramento in 1870 and operated a gun shop at 153 K Street until his retirement in 1896. Mr. Shelton, in his book California Gunsmiths, describes him as “ ..a highly respected gunsmith… making guns for the most skilled marksmen and the experienced hunter.”
