A small Greek icon of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus who is holding an orb. There is Arabic lettering on the upper right, which would be appropriate for an item made in the Greek portions of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. This is painted on a wooden plank, and is the smallest of the three from General McNarney. All three were purchased in 1960 from a dealer named Farid Salman with a shop at Herod's Gate in Jerusalem. A copy of the letter identifying them can be included with the purchase. Size: 8 by-5 1/2 by3/4 inches. Provenance: Estate of General Joseph McNarney. Processing and shipping in the Continental United States is $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement coat insurance.

Condition

The icon is in only good condition. The painting is faded, and it is very worn around the edges of the plank, with a section of painting entirely missing from the lower right hand corner. There is also a chip out of the Virgin Mary's face. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
