An exceptionally nice hammerless 12 gauge shotgun by Clabrough & Johnstone of Birmingham, with a beautiful Damascus pattern to the barrels. It has a tang safety, and very nice pistol grip stock with checkering at the wrist and on the forend. The serial number is 1562, made in 1896, and the barrel rib is engraved “Clabrough & Johnstone: Makers: Birmingham.” There is very fine engraving on the receiver and trigger guard. It has Birmingham proofs for the period of manufacture. The gun was apparently made without a butt plate. This gun is illustrated and discussed in Mr. Shelton’s book on Clabrough.
