A very interesting and unusual Filipino Talibon (also spelled talibong, taribong, or talebong) sword with the date of 1886 marked on the blade. Making it a nice early one. These were traditionally used by the Visayans of the Philippines, particularly in the islands of the Eastern Visayas and Central Visayas. The pommel is very nicely carved and has remnants of gold gilding or painting to the wood. The handle has rattan weave that shows great patina. The scabbard is very nice, with open work carving featuring floral petals in descending size, the first petal with a red glass insert, the other petals missing their glass insert but this could be repaired. The top of the scabbard has a very nice floral carving in bold relief. The tip of the scabbard in decorative shape with some simple line carvings. There are 3 holes at the end of the scabbard that probably once held some type of inlay. The blade is rather beefy, with the numerals "1886" which I presume to be a date, along with other decorative line decoration along the blade. The spine, near the handle, has a recessed area which makes for a perfect thumb rest. All in all, a unique and early Talibon sword.

Dimensions: 19" blade, 28.75" long overall

Condition

Blade has some scratches and stains. Much of the pommel gilding has worn away with time and handling. Unfortunately, there is a broken piece at the top backside of the scabbard, probably done quite some time ago given the patina around the break. There is also a break at the tip of the scabbard.
