The butterfly sword is a short dao, or single-edged sword, originally from southern China. They date from the early 19th century. English accounts from this time almost always called them "double swords". Butterfly swords are usually wielded in pairs, carried in the same scabbard to look like a single weapon. They are used in several Kung Fu martial arts; Wing Chun, Hung Ga, and Choy Li Fut. They were are also infamously used in Chinese tong wars in California around the turn of the century. This example appears a bit more crude than other examples and could be tong made.

Dimensions: 17.75" long overall, 13.25" blade.
