A fine 19th century brass balance scale set known as the "Miner’s Improved Gold Scale," manufactured expressly for the California Gold Rush market. Housed in its original bright orange-painted toleware case with black stenciled eagle motif and inscription. The set includes the balance arm, two brass pans suspended by chains, and a complete set of assorted brass weights. Case retains a partial “Germany” paper label to underside.
