Blood Chits were provided in U.S. pilot survival kits in the pacific during WWII. They were a message for Chinese civilians that the downed pilot was friendly and rewards would be given for assistance. Pilots would often sew them to jackets or flight suits to be sure they always had it, it was the only way to communicate who they were to most locals.
