Exceptionally fine aneroid barometer and thermometer, possibly originally for a ship, by George Gowland, Southcastle Street, Liverpool, circa 1880. It is mounted on a finely shaped length of mahogany with a weighted bottom, and was probably originally on a gimbal for use on shipboard. The barometer is at the top, and the thermometer, which has markings in Fahrenheit and Rexumur, is on the long portion of the body. There is a gilt brass adjustment knob just below the barometer. George Gowland was a maker of fine nautical instruments at 76 Southcastle Street in Liverpool during the Victorian era and earlier. Size: 36 inches long by 4 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/2 inches deep.
