A framed woodblock print titled "In the Snow of Tsukahara on Sado Island" by Edo (Japan pre-1868) artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861). The title and artist's stamp are along the left side.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) was an Edo artist considered one of the last great masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style. He began his career at an early age as a pupil of Shunei, then going on to study the art of woodblock printing under Toyokuni I at just 14 years old. He eventually left the studio in 1814 to pursue work independently, however struggled to earn commissions amid the large artist community. Finally in 1827, Kuniyoshi's series "108 Heroes of the Suikoden" gained national attention and earned him entry into the major social circles of the time. He continued working until his death from complications of a stroke in 1861. Today he is remembered for his portrayal of legendary heroes, samurai warriors, bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), and traditional Japanese style landscapes.
