A US Springfield Model 1842 Musket, with the lock plate marked 1851 and the barrel marked 1852, certainly issued during the Civil War.
The gun has two cartouches visible opposite the lock, and has the VP over the eagle's head on the breech. The ramrod is missing, but both sling swivels are present.
Size: 56 inches long overall, with a 42 inch barrel.

A good solid 1842, but very dirty, with the stock and the metal dark brown from poor storage. The marks are sharp, and the gun will clean well. The ramrod is missing.
