Two round bone boxes, probably for snuff. One has a fine portrait of Napoleon as First Consul on the lid; the second is also round, but larger, with a portrait of a pre-Revolutionary French officer on the lid. He is wearing a wig, epaulets, and a gorget. The label states that the portrait is signed and dated, although neither is visible. There is a label inside the lid identifying him as a French Lieutenant General painted in 1786. Size: The box with Napoleon is 2 1/2 inches across and 3/4 inches tall. The other box is 3 1/8 inches across and 3/4 inches tall. Provenance: Estate of General Joseph McNarney. The lining in the Napoleon box shows minor wear, and there is a crack in the bone surround of the Napoleon portrait.
