Wilson was born in Glasgow and later moved to New York in 1893. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute, then with artist Howard Pyle. After the success of Iron Men and Wooden Ships (1924), Wilson's first full-length book project, his work grew into great demand. By 1940 he was an accomplished full-time illustrator with works in 77 books including Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1952), Jane Eyre (1944), and Treasure Island (1941). Wilson also maintained acclaim for his WPA and World War II illustrations, which featured industrial workers and soldiers in idealized, heroic lights. He died in 1970 at the age of 84.
