A framed oil on canvas folk art style portrait of a woman wearing a high-neck black dress accented with jewelry and holding a bouquet of flowers. It has characteristics often associated with American School portraiture, including a direct frontal presentation, carefully delineated facial features and clothing, simplified anatomy and perspective, as well as considerable attention to personal details. The featured woman stands behind a wooden fence set against a moody pastoral background. The painting is housed in a traditional ornate gilt frame. It is lightly signed and dated "J. Hessling 1883" in the bottom left corner.
Dimensions: (painting, sight) 38h x 28.75w inches, (frame) 42h x 32.5w inches

Condition
Fair antique condition. This painting has gone through extensive restoration efforts, including relining and restretching. While it is stable due to these measures, it illuminates under blacklight as a result. There are some paint loss chips along her face, as well as craquelure across. The frame shows moderate age-related wear, notably along the top margin where the molding is lifting and there is a visible gap between the frame and canvas. Please see photos.
