A Zia Pueblo olla jar by Ruby Panana (b. 1954). The jar has a rounded body with a gently flared shouldered and a wide opening. It is decorated in traditional Zia symbolic motifs including a roadrunner figure, representing spiritual messengers and directions, and architectural forms, representing the connection of the earth and sky. Signed on the underside, "Ruby Panana / Zia." Ruby Panana was born into the Coyote Clan of the Zia Pueblo to noted potter Seferina Pino Bell, who passed down the fundamentals of Zia pottery to her daughter from an early age. Over time Ruby has become known for large scale jars and vessels decorated in traditional symmetrical, narrative designs of her community. Though she now lives in the Jemez Pueblo with her husband, she remains a source for a large portion of traditional Zia pottery found today.
