Robert L. May, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", Montgomery War & Co., 1939.
Robert L. May, whose daughter chose the name Rudolph, wrote the poem at the request of his employers, the Chicago- based department store chain Montgomery Ward & Co., and, illustrated by Denver Gillen, the thirty-two-page book was distributed by the company to its child customers as a keepsake. Several years later, and inspired by the poem but taking a different line, Johnny Marks wrote the more familiar lyrics, and Gene Autry
recorded the much-loved song.
