Pair of World War Two German air force award badges. A flak badge and a ground assault badge. The ground assault badge is of mid-to-late war zinc-alloy construction and the flak badge is an earlier tombak example. The flak badge also has the original box. What follows is the basic history and qualification requirements for each of these badges:
Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge (Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe)
Instituted 31 March 1942 by Hermann Göring. Awarded to Luftwaffe personnel for participation in at least three separate ground combat operations on different days (or posthumously).
Luftwaffe Anti-Aircraft (Flak) Badge (Flak-Kampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe)
Instituted 10 January 1941 by Hermann Göring. Awarded primarily on a points system (16 points required) for anti-aircraft crews or for bravery/merit in air-defense duties; also available to searchlight and sound-locator crews.
