Orson Lowell was an American artist best known for his work often featured in magazines. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later moved to New York City in 1893 to begin his career. In 1905, he found enough success to buy a home in New Rochelle, New York. Shortly thereafter it became an art colony after Norman Rockwell, Edward Penfield, and others moved into the neighborhood. By 1907, he was nationally recognized for his cartoons with a social messages featured in LIFE, Cosmopolitan, Ladies' Home Journal, Metropolitan Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Scribner's, Vogue, and Woman's Home Companion.
