Extremely fine probably British made Model 1796 light cavalry saber and scabbard with markings of the New York 10th Cavalry. The sword is marked on both the scabbard throat and the underside of the guard NY, over C, over 10. The iron hilt and scabbard have been blackened. The grip is wood that has been painted, with lines showing where the wire was originally. Size: 38 7/8 inches long overall. Condition
The blade is bright for most of its length, with some darkness under the langets. There are no markings. The outside of the sword is dark with traces of light rust on the scabbard, as well as a number of minor dents. The hilt is dark with minor pitting visible on the langets. One screw is missing from the throat. The blade was service sharpened, and has been cleaned. The blade is straight and tight to the hilt, with no wiggle at all.
