The Moro Barung / Barong is a large leaf shaped bolo sword. They were almost exclusively used by the Moros of the Sulu Sultanate, Sulu archipelago, Philippines. The metal grip ferrule on this piece appears to be brass or copper. The banati wood "kakatua" cockatoo motif pommel Is the standard for these weapons. The style of the plume carving on this example as well as the fact that the handle has a guard are indicative of 20th century tourist examples. The scabbard is held together with an aluminum band and washers.
