Modern Gothic sideboard with marble top work surface and incised decoration over drawer fronts and accents. The primary wood is laurel and secondary wood is Western U.S. in origin. This piece is attributed to J.B. Luchsinger & Son, San Francisco, CA (1864-1887). This firm was known in 19th century San Francisco for "first class custom furniture". The founder, John B. Luchsinger (1826-1889), learned his trade in Switzerland before moving to the United States. This company furnished many public buildings, banks and private residences on the Pacific coast. They were awarded a first premium for their display of California manufactured furniture at the 1877 Mechanics Institute. Their advertisements commit to "all kinds of artistic furniture."
