A white ceramic pot lid printed in rich red with an ornate foliate border surrounding the text: “Roussel’s Unrivalled Premium Shaving Cream / Gold & Silver Medals awarded by the Institutes of New York, Philadelphia, and Boston / X. Bazin, 166 Chesnut St., Philadelphia.” Edward Roussel was a prominent Philadelphia perfumer in the mid-1800s whose shaving cream and cosmetic wares were widely distributed, particularly through Xavier Bazin, a French-born perfumer and soap manufacturer. Examples of Roussel’s shaving cream containers have been recovered from Gold Rush–era sites, including those sold in the Central America shipwreck auctions, illustrating their popularity among California-bound Forty-Niners seeking luxury personal goods during the boom years.
