Meyer Straus (California, 1831-1905) oil on board painting, Reminiscence of the Plains. Meyer Strauss’ works are held by the Oakland Museum, the California Historical Society, and the Nevada Museum. At only 17 years old he immigrated from Bavaria to the United States in 1848 and worked and painted in Ohio, New Orleans, Chicago, and then California, where he lived in San Francisco. In 1876 he opened a Montgomery Street studio.
